Day 1 - Starting: Cuzco & Finishing: Cuzco
Welcome to Cuzco, Peru. On arrival to the airport in Cuzco transfer to your hotel, which is close to the centre of town. Your adventure begins with a meeting at 2 pm. Please check the noticeboard at hotel reception for details about this briefing. We'll be collecting insurance details and next of kin information at this meeting, so ensure you bring these details to provide to your leader.Afterwards, head out for an orientation walk with your leader before an optional group dinner in the evening. If you arrive early into Cuzco, perhaps visit the ancient Incan ruins of Qorikancha or take part in an organic chocolate-making workshop at the Choco Museo. Notes: If you can't arrange a flight that will arrive in time, you may wish to arrive a day early so you're able to attend. We'll be happy to book additional accommodation for you (subject to availability).
Day 2 - Starting: Sacared Valley (Exploring Pisac) & Finishing: Sacared Valley (Exploring Pisac)
Early in the morning depart Cuzco by private vehicle for the Sacred Valley. For lunch, enjoy a traditional ‘Pachamanca’ meal - marinated meat baked under hot stones. In the afternoon, you'll have the option to visit the archaeological complex in Pisac or go for a moderate hike in the hills and mountains of the Sacred Valley. Later, enjoy access to the ancient hamlet of Viacha to learn about its unique farming of Peruvian potatoes.
Day 3 - Starting: Lares region (Inca sites & Villages) & Finishing: Lares region (Inca sites & Villages)
Today drive deeper into the Lares region of the Sacred Valley. The journey into the mountains will take you through remote archaeological sites where you'll be able to stop to explore. After lunch, choose between visiting a traditional weaver’s village or a scenic drive and moderate hike. The hike will take you past lakes and peaks to the remote village of Huacahuasi, where locals provide insight into the evolving lives of the Andean people. The evening is then free for you to do as you wish.
Day 4 - Starting: Sacred Valley (Ollaytaytambo) & Finishing: Sacred Valley (Ollaytaytambo)
This morning visit the community of Huacahuasi to learn more about their heritage and daily life. Afterwards, embark on another spectacular hike from your lodge to the adjacent valley leading to the ancient town of Ollantaytambo. Another option is to drive back through more towns in the Sacred Valley and visit an ethnographic museum featuring the history of Peru’s rich civilizations of the past. Lunch in the Urubamba countryside on your way to Ollantaytambo to explore this charming town on foot. Before the drive back to the Sacred Valley, enjoy an optional afternoon bike ride through the countryside and past salt pools.
Day 5 - Starting: Ollaytaytambo- Aguas Calientes & Finishing: Ollaytaytambo- Aguas Calientes
Take a short hike early in the morning to the Incan storage structures high above Ollantaytambo, where you’ll find magnificent views over the town and temple. Afterwards enjoy a guided tour of the fortress, which is a classic example of Incan architecture. Around midday, head off on the scenic train journey along the Urubamba River valley to Aguas Calientes - a busy town below the ruins of Machu Picchu. Perhaps use the afternoon’s free time to relax in the local hot springs and possibly head out for dinner in the evening.
Day 6 - Starting: Machu Picchu - Cusco & Finishing: Machu Picchu - Cusco
At dawn, board a bus for the short climb to Machu Picchu. As you enter the ruins, witness the spectacular scene of the morning sun rising over the Sun Gate. In the early evening, return to Cuzco by train and private coach. Perhaps use your last night in Cuzco to reflect on your memories over some Peruvian cuisine.
