Itinerary

Day 1 - Starting: La Paz & Finishing: La Paz

On arrival at La Paz's El Alto International Airport you will be met and transferred to your hotel in the city. Please look for your transfer guide at the airport – they will be holding a sign with your name on it. Once you have checked into the hotel, the remainder of your first day will be free. At around 3,600 metres, La Paz feels like the top of the world and vies with Tibet for the title of highest capital in the world. Although Sucre is the official capital of Bolivia, La Paz is the centre of commerce, finance and industry. Despite the abundance of colonial architecture, La Paz's indigenous roots run deep, and the atmosphere in the market-filled streets is both modern and traditional. Head out into the city, situated in the middle of a vast volcanic crater. Breathe the thin air, marvel at the vistas of buildings clinging to the canyonsides, and explore the lively streets like Calle Jaen. This evening you will then meet with your local guide, who will give you a rundown on your upcoming activities in La Paz.

Day 2 - Starting: La Paz & Finishing: La Paz

This morning you will be met at your hotel by your local leader and embark on a city tour of La Paz (please confirm the time at your meeting the night before). Begin with a dramatic view of the city with a ride on the world’s highest 'urban' cable car. The line stretches six miles above the capital at 13,000ft, connecting La Paz with its twin city EL Alto, once a suburb of La Paz but today one of Bolivia's largest and fastest-growing urban centres. The city – a challenging urban environment that is a mix of shacks, half finished buildings and church spires – enjoys beautiful views across the snow-capped peaks of the Cordillera Real. Here you will visit some craft markets, selling goods made of alpaca wool, leather and other traditional materials, before visiting the Mercado de Hechiceria or Witches' Market. Browse the weird and wonderful stalls that sell everything from potions to incantations made from herbs. This witches market is rarely seen by tourists and is much more authentic than the smaller witches market in La Paz. Just outside the market is a street with dozens of types of doctors or shamans (although they prefer not to be called that today). For around 10 bolivianos (AUD 2) you can have your fortune told about your future health, love, or career. Reboard the cable car to the south of the city and take a walking tour of the extraordinary landscape of Moon Valley. This isn’t a valley, but a maze of canyons and colossal clay spires. These rugged oddities, caused by erosion, make for staggering views. On the way back down to La Paz you’ll stop at the Mirador Killi Killi Lookout. Located on top of a steep hill in the neighbourhood of Villa Pabon, it is one of La Paz’s most impressive viewing points. When you get back down to ground level the next stop is the National Museum of Ethnography and Folklore, which exhibits a wide collection of stunning works that takes you through Bolivian history. Your city tour comes to an end just in time for lunch. When the sun sets and the temperature drops, join the locals in seeking warmth in a bar or restaurant. Please speak to your tour leader for some suggestions of restaurants or places to eat. Notes: Please be aware that the order of your tour may change slightly according to weather, however you will still visit everything mentioned in the itinerary.

Day 3 - Starting: La Paz & Finishing: La Paz

Your Independent Experience of La Paz will come to an end today after breakfast, when you will be transferred to the airport for your onward flight. Please ensure we are advised of your flight details booking your La Paz Experience.

More Information

There are many weird and wonderful items on offer at the Witches’ Market in La Paz, from longevity-granting toucan beaks and ‘lucky’ frogs to sweaters and blankets handmade from alpaca wool. Those with an open mind can ponder the symbolism of the sacrificial llama, or perhaps consult a yatiri – the fortune-telling witchdoctor recognisable by their trademark hat and coca pouch.
