Day 1 - Starting: Shanghai & Finishing: Shanghai
Nimen Hao! Welcome to China. Blending 21st-century architecture with old-world character, Shanghai pulses with the beat of new China. A Shanghai airport or train station arrival transfer is included, please provide your flight/train details at the time of booking, or no later than 14 days prior to travel. Once you have provided your details a transfer representative will be booked to meet you and transfer you to your hotel. Your local guide will meet and greet you at the hotel upon your arrival. Shanghai’s bright lights, fevered trade and frenetic pace provide a glimpse into the dazzling global future of the country. Your evening is free for your first exploration of the city – perhaps get a taste of Shanghai’s eclectic food scene, which draws on influences from far beyond China’s walls.
Day 2 - Starting: Shanghai & Finishing: Shanghai
Today join your leader for a walking tour that will take you to historical Shanghai. At the Bund you can get a taste of 1920s Shanghai; its spectacular array of art deco style buildings, formerly belonging to Western banks, line what was once the most important financial street in Asia. Wander the narrow winding lanes (nongtangs) of old Shanghai, where you can get a real glimpse into the locals’ daily life. Explore the European-influenced French Concession, the area of Shanghai once designated for the French, consisting of today's Luwan and Xuhui Districts. Luwan's Huaihai Road is a busy shopping street and is home to Xintiandi and Tian Zi Fang, extremely popular shopping and dining spots for visitors. The area's tree-lined avenues and their many Tudor mansions still retain an air of the 'Paris of the East'. You’ll also get a fascinating look at China's revolutionary past at the Propaganda Museum, which houses a collection of posters detailing the government’s attempts to control the thoughts of the population. There will also be time to wander the Yuyuan Gardens – famous classical gardens from the 16th century that retain the feel of traditional China. Contrast that with the sights of Pudong – the modern financial centre – with its amazing skyscrapers like the iconic Pearl Tower, and the world's highest observation deck on the 100th floor of the Shanghai World Financial Centre.
Day 3 - Starting: Shanghai & Finishing: Shanghai
This morning you’ll drive out of the big city to a town where ancient times live on – Zhujiajiao (approximately 1 hour). You’ll spend the day exploring this ancient, well-preserved Chinese water town. Surrounded by lakes and rivers, with canals running through the centre and bridges crossing them, the town is undeniably picturesque. You’ll spend some time exploring with you leader before free time on your own. Walk down the cobbled alleyway and across bridges like Fangsheng Bridge, and then find a traditional (or perhaps cool) café for lunch. You could also sample some of the wares of the street vendors who sell food all-over town. Explore the Kezhi garden, the old buildings, and get your fortune told in Yuanjin Buddhist temple. Maybe get a unique view of the town on a boat trip, with a tea ceremony and traditional Chinese music on-board. When you return to the city, perhaps end your last Shanghai evening with a beer or cocktail in one of the highest bars in the world.
Day 4 - Starting: Shanghai & Finishing: Shanghai
Your Shanghai experience will come to end today after breakfast. There are no activities planned for the final day and you are able to depart the accommodation at any time.
